A time for everything

Columbus Zoo

Tuesday 23 May
I have been wanting to visit Columbus zoo for quite a while, so today was finally the day. Our Cincinnati Zoo membership gives us a significant discount on the admission. Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical gardens are somewhat unusual in being within the city, and therefore somewhat limited for space, but having said that, they make very good use of the space available, and the differences in level, and are constantly updating the areas. It is also a Botanical garden, so has beautiful plantings and shrubs. They are also a very “green” zoo, keeping their footprint as small as possible. Columbus, the state capital, is in the heart of Ohio, where it is largely flat. The zoo is built in the suburbs, and therefore has room to spread, so the enclosures are much bigger and spacious, which is great for the animals, less so if you are trying to photograph them sometimes! We didn’t cover all of it in the time we had available - it is huge, and we didn’t find the map the most helpful - but we saw a good deal of it. There were things I liked and other things I didn’t. I guess we shall have to come back sometime, perhaps in the early autumn, and get to know it a bit better. The animals I chose for my collage are, from top left and going clockwise, Cougar, Cheetah, ostrich, Markhor goat (from mountainous areas such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan Uzbekistan and northern India).
Three more blips posted this evening - do check them out! I’m almost caught up!
