Toe Head Hike

We were up early and out of the house by 7.45am this morning to rendezvous in Toe Head with a group of Gaeilgeoirs (Irish speakers) and Conor who runs wonderful events via his company Gormú. 20 humans and two dogs gathered to do the cliff top hike - approximately 7km of the most scenic walking you could ever hope to encounter! Down tiny lanes rampant with wildflowers, past sandy strands and then up onto the cliffs ablaze with sea pinks, marsh orchids, trefoils and clovers. The highlight was the slightly daring trip out to an Iron Age promontory fort - they always have a tiny neck separating them from the mainland and we were advised to concentrate, not get distracted and not wander too close to the edge - especially those of us taking myriad photos! The views were incredible looking out to islands and sites of wrecks, and two seals (Tadgh and Donnacha Donn!) popped their heads up. We also admired the huge EIRE sign made out of large blocks of stone,  reminding bombers in WW2 that they were over Ireland, a neutral country. The 7km took about 4 hours as there were many marvellous stories and folktales to hear - selkies, bachelor brothers, Fionn MacCool, tithe wars, Diarmuid and Grainne, shipwrecks - and everything had to be admired and inspected. We ended up at a strand where hot coffee and homemade biscuits were waiting for us - I was seriously ready for those!  After everyone had gone Himself and i had a swim and it was delightful
The weather was astonishing, up to 23C, with a stiff breeze in places so we are weather-beaten and wrecked! I think Himself has had a quick zzz on the sofa,
There's a little bit of red (okay pink) in there for the Wide Wednesday challenge.
