Zeppelinstein Ottobeuren

Rained all morning, went to the butchers shortly before midday. Packed as Bank Holiday tomorrow & probably everybody wanting to B-B-Q as it may reach 12°C despite the forecasted heavy rain. Could also be hording as there are fears there could be some flooding. Meat in the car (at 5°C colder than in fridge) and off for our walk armed with umbrella. For protection against the rain we went in to the Bannwald wood/forest. It promptly stopped raining and instead we got rained on from the water falling off the leaves!
Don't know why I had never spotted this stone with the plaque "Zeppelin 2 April 1909". Ottobeuren is known as the starting point of the first German unmanned hot air balloon in 1784 but I had never heard of any Zeppelin events. Back home Googled and found out it was to commemorate Zeppelin flying over Ottobeuren after a flight to Munich. It seems that matters connected with "aviation" caused mass enthusiasm. These stones were set up throughout Germany where Zeppelins landed, flew over or crashed and there were many crashes. Interestingly Zeppelin was largely financed in the early days from a state lottery and public donations. One crash in Stuttgart in 1908 resulted in the spectators starting a donation appeal which rose 6 million Marks.
For family reasons, (my son is a keen balloon "driver" and even a British Balloon and Airship Club award winner) these things interest me and I have great respect as everything higher than the second rung of a ladder are highly suspect and by the fifth rung I am unconscious.
