Nuthatch at its Nesthole

First day of our birding tour in southern Lapland. After a couple of hours in the afternoon, we did a full evening of owling, seeing a great grey and a pygmy owl, plus nightjars briefly.

This is the Eurasian Nuthatch, at its nest. Note the way it has narrowed the hole with mud to suit its needs (and to reduce the risk of predation)--the first time I have ever seen that!

To bed--it's well past midnight and breakfast at 6:45 am. Our expert guides are really cracking the whip :)
