Spoils Of War

Today I was in Ludlow, walking the streets whilst having some work done on my car.

I have often seen but not spent time around this magnificent old canon, situated outside Ludlow Castle.

It is not British. It was made for the Russian military in 1799, and captured by the British during the Crimean war. It is one of several such guns captured and shipped back to this country, and given to a number of towns as 'trophies', namely Leominster, Bridgnorth and Hereford.

This is one of the very few that survived, the others melted down to support the war effort (WWll) and some were used to make medals such as the Victoria Cross!

The main image shows the embossed image of the Russian Imperial two headed eagle.

The extra is the canon itself.

And the link below gives a lot more detail and fascinating information if you are interested and have the time.
