A day in the life

Concert-Ruin

The old castle ruin of Borgholm is still in use as a tourist attraction and as a concert venue during the summer season. It was originally build during the second half of the 13th century and was destroyed in a fire in 1806.

I hadn't planned to go to the concert this evening but I was given a ticket by someone who got ill and couldn't go. The stage is huge, so are the sound capabilities and at times the music got unnecessarily loud for my taste, luckily I always bring my earplugs for concerts like this.

The music was played by two bands. First Mari Boine, an interesting singer with a Sami heritage. She use the ancient "Joik" to express her concerns about nature and spirituality. Next a Norwegian band called "Wardruna" arspecialising in using the instruments from the iron age but used in their own way. The music is powerful, manipulative and  very dark, so is the message about the world coming to an end. I soon got tired of their music even though they cleverly use old instruments and voices to create something of their own. Another side of this kind of music is that it can encourage some acting out violent symbolic acts in the audience that I find disturbing, like standing broad legged raising your fists against the sky in a threatening manner. I know I'm oversensitive to this kind of manifestations, don't take me too seriously.

Anyway, it was an interesting evening and I'm glad I went.
