On Some Days

Always By Billie Holiday

It has been another great day for us.  I didn't mention yesterday that we stayed with another random connection from the fishing group.  Doug had stayed with us in 2019 because we knew Martin.  We asked him lots of questions about Alaska back then and now we are here we looked him up.  He had his three sons home but he welcomed us and we parked on his driveway.  He lives in Girdwood and is surrounded by mountains and green growth.  It was as if he lives on top of the world. Girdwood is a ski town in winter.  Today it was having a fair day and we saw another small town parade.  Over coffee on his deck we had more good conversations.
The extra is a pano of his view.
We said our goodbyes and drove towards Anchorage.  On the way there was a stop at Bird Point to look at Turn Again Arm and I took this picture of the sky because it was BLUE and not overcast as the last days have been.
On getting near Anchorage we parked and were walking towards Starbucks for a drink and wifi when the phone rang.  It was sister in law from Richmond telling us the brother in law died peacefully last night.  The cancer he had was most aggressive.  He has featured in my blips and has always been referred to as the brother in law.  From phone conversations and texts it seems he was accepting of his future and I admire him for that.  He was able to look at his life and be proud of the rich variety he achieved.  He leaves two accomplished daughters and little Harry his grandson.  We went to his younger daughters wedding only a few months ago. So swiftly things changed.  He loved jazz music and especially Billie Holiday.  RIP Colin.
