Sgwarnog: In the Field

Deluge

After the deluge…

…a relatively quiet moment between the Men’s and Women’s 100m finals at the close of Day 1 of the UK Athletics Championships at the Manchester Regional Arena. This stadium was originally the warm-up track for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium looms large over the track.

18yo and I had travelled over to be there more or less from the start at 11:00. Thunderstorms had been forecast throughout the day but for most of the day, apart from a few showers, we were relatively lucky. From around 18:30 the rain set in more seriously - not too much of a problem for the distance events, but just as the athletes were lining up for the Men’s 100m final the lighting flashed and the heavens opened. Somehow they let that race go ahead (see a clip on my Twitter if you haven’t seen it) and Zharnel Hughes posted a phenomenal time considering the conditions (extra).

I’ve posted a few more images from the day in extras. A full and enjoyable day out.
