A New (old) Carpet

I was greatly impressed to see, and hear today about this carpet at Saltram House, Plymouth. In 1768 the Scottish designer and architect Robert Adam was commissioned to  design almost every detail of the saloon "as a total work of art". The large, decorative, saloon, carpet seen here has been woven using the same pattern as the original, which it now overlays. The original was woven in the Devon Town of Axminster in 1770. In 2022-23 the Axminster Carpet Company rebuilt its largest loom to reweave two partial copies that can be laid over the original with each covering two thirds of the width of the original, allowing them to be rotated. The two extras show some more of the detail of the carpet.
