Mattawoman Creek

Today we took my sister and her husband for a cruise on the river. We put in at Smallwood State Park and sailed down into the Potomac to Mallows Bay. We sailed past Naval Support Facility Indian Head and watched them blow up something big. What a huge explosion and fire! Then we sailed by Naval Base Stump Neck Annex and down to Mallows Bay which is across from Quantico Marine base. It was interesting that we had an MV-22 Osprey fly directly over our boat, then a helicopter also flew over. My sister, who is a retired USAF Colonel, is convinced that we were being checked out, especially since I had a camera and was taking photos.
We ended up back at the heron rookery for some lunch and fishing. My husband spotted these eagles way overhead, high in a tree. Shooting from a bouncing boat in the water was a challenge!
The extra is from last night. It is a heron walking along the bank of the rookery.
