Stuff and Nonsense

Puffin Isafjordur

Backblip

Another port and the windiest day so far. Yet another nature trip for us to a small island called Vigur which is a little bit like Skomer, but not as big. It was full of birds - puffins in their thousands, terns, eiders, redshank and loads of black guillemots.
The journey over was really bumpy and quite exciting if I'm honest - but at least we were inside and not getting soaked by the spray or the wind.
Upon arrival we were given a stick with a little numbered flag on it. This served two purposes - to count the number of visitors and to ward off the arctic terns that were quite aggressive.
We were given a short tour of the part of the island we were allowed to visit, offered a piece of cake and a coffee and a talk about eider ducks and the collection and cleaning of the down. This was all very interesting, but all I wanted was to get out there a photograph some puffins. By the time we were allowed to roam freely, the rain had started again and we only had around 15 minutes so I wasn't that amused as you can imagine.  However, I managed to get a few shots I was reasonably happy with so that was OK. I would have stayed their for another couple of hours if I was allowed to, but they were concerned that the weather was worsening and made us re-board the boat.
On the way back we saw a couple of whales at distance which was a nice bonus.
More birds in extras if you're interested.
