There was a time when life was dominated by meetings of one sort or another. Properly done they’re a way of getting things to move on and things to happen.

Now I’m retired meetings are a real rarity. But I am a member of a Committee (a voluntary role), and whilst most meetings are online this is the third face to face one since I’ve been doing it. Today’s venue was the Gujurat Hindu Society Cultural and Recreation Centre in the city of Preston. It’s obviously a real cultural hub for the community, and community members were very welcoming.

After the meeting I had a short walk to the nearby city centre, which I don’t know very well, and was impressed. It’s a very multi- cultural place (a mosque and gurdwara were close by the meeting venue). Included as an extra is a chap putting the finishing touches to a large mural off Fishergate (the city’s symbol is the lamb), which is the main retail street and has been hugely improved with pavement widening and a one way system for buses and taxis only. I then walked down to the River Ribble to join the group looking at the enhanced flood defence scheme under construction along the tidal river.
