SOLITARY SWEAT BEE

It's Tiny Tuesday and today's submission is a tiny green bee known colloquially as a sweat bee.  They belong to Class Insecta, Order Hymenoptera,  Family Halictidae......a.k.a. Halictid Bees.  There are many different species but all are morphologically similar.

Called sweat bees because they are attracted to the salt in human sweat.  The coneflowers in my garden are attracting bees of all kinds including this pollen packed Halictid. It's only about 1/4 inch long (6mm) but their metallic green color really gets them noticed in bright sunlight.

Best in Large.
