The Destitute Sick

Never spotted this before.

The Society originated in 1785 on a voluntary basis, and was incorporated by a Seal of Cause granted by the Town Council of Edinburgh in 1813. It existed to provide relief to those prevented from earning a living by illness, and who were unable to make claims on other public charities or on parish funds. The conditions of applicants were assessed by the Society?s visitors, who determined whether each case was a deserving one and worthy of relief.

The visitors evangelised and offered spiritual as well as pecuniary relief. Alternatively donations of clothing, coal and meal were made, if considered more appropriate than financial relief.

Seems there's still someone there.
