A day in the life

Birthday with insects

My friends and visitors left this afternoon after a delightful visit for a couple of days with great food, good talks and walks. It was so nice to have them here for a while.

Later in the evening I was invited to a birthday party at one of my friend in Skogsby, the village where I used to live. I cycled there because I knew that a bottle or two of beer will be consumed. Him and his wife had prepared a delicious meal for us, the twelve guests and the evening soon turned into night. One of the guests was Pav Johnsson, the guy in the striped t-shirt in the extra, who is a well known writer and expert in birds and insects, had prepared a surprise. He put up a white little tent where he put a fluorescent lamp inside. The canvas was packed with small and large insects, he thought there were about 500 species gathered there, more than there are species of birds in Sweden.
He pointe out this little insect as a Lymantria dispar, a rare species that only exist on this island and maybe a couple of more areas in this part of Sweden. He was surprised and glad to find it and told us this is a male and with his extremely sensitive antennae, hey can detect the scent of a female within a 30 km radius, quite astonishing. A very interesting evening.
