What it's all about

Today was the first officially open-to-public day of Caffi Transition/Transition Cafe, a community enterprise to recycle surplus food from local shops and producers. It's taken over a year to get the project off the ground but thanks to good will, generosity and hard work we've finally made it and after lots of hiccups we're up and running serving.

There was a steady stream of customers today and the food got plenty of compliments. There were quiches and pizzas, various salads, strawberry flan, chocolate cake and lemon curd muffins. We had a minor crisis when the sweet and sour chicken tasted burnt but we renamed it smoky barbecue chicken and it went down a treat.

I was going to blip the edibles or the cooking team but this was a shot that I couldn't pass up. Steven is a young local lad who washes up for us one day a week (he's also a mean singer favouring the hits of Queen in particular.) Here he's catching up with a community worker who dropped in for a bite to eat and recognised him. It would be nice to think the cafe will be a place where such connections can be made as well as stomachs filled and food that would otherwise go to waste put to good use.
