Sgwarnog: In the Field

Swing

An overcast day, although the rain didn’t arrive in the amount forecast, so I managed to walk to the football at Thackley and back without getting drenched.

It was the first (extra preliminary) round of the FA cup, with the teams from non league steps four and five in the hat at this stage. I generally prefer to pick a tie which pits teams from different leagues against each other, but Thackley was the only feasible choice today, and they’d drawn Goole who are fellow members of the NCEL Premier Division. Still, a Yorkshire and River Aire derby.

Given my formative years exposure to Jasper Carrott sketches it was somewhat disappointing to find that the Goole fans insisted on referring to their team as The Vikings rather than the more obvious affectionate term.

It was a competitive game (extra) with swings in momentum. Thackley had a 2-1 lead at half-time and it could have been more, but Goole came back strongly in the second half to level things. After 10+ minutes of added time,  just when it seemed to be heading for a replay, Goole came up with a winner. Their fans certainly seemed happy as they climbed back into their longboats for the long row back home along the River Aire.

Today’s image comes from the walk back home, a view along the canal from the Buck Lane swing bridge.
