Three Joes and Jane

This evening we made a spur of the moment decision to cycle into  Winchester for our supper.  We chose the Three Joes restaurant  in the Square which specialises in sourdough pizzas. After a good meal we wandered across the Square and around  the Cathedral grounds. We listened to  the Wednesday night bell ringing  practice taking place  in the tower of the  Cathedral, which was accompanied by  the squealing of the Swifts as they flew around the  tower. We walked alongside  the Weirs on the river Itchen,  past Wolvesey Palace, home to the Bishop, and  then by  the Winchester College  buildings, and through Kingsgate. I paused to reflect that  so much of our experience of  Winchester tonight would have been recognisable to Jane Austen who died there, in College Street, in 1817.
Then we rejoined the  21st century, hopped on our e- bikes, and pedalled home, enjoying the last rays of sun on a balmy summer evening.          We agreed  we ought to do this more often, to  appreciate  better our  lovely adopted city.
