Life's Little Moments

A Hairy Arse

This is the first Juriniopsis adjusta (or Hairy Arsed Fly) I've seen this summer.  They are quite large and rather fearsome looking although they present no threat to humans.  They are commonly known as bristle flies in the Tachinid family and the word "adjusta" in the name means "burnt" which is surely a reference to the reddish color of the bottom.  Surprisingly little is written about them although I think they are fairly common.  So while most species of tachinid flies are parasitic, I have no idea what this one preys on.  This one was busy on the blossoms of a pot of kitchen mint on the patio.

I've had a lazy day, rather lacking in any energy.  So a bit of pottering in the garden, some photography and some play time with Jax and not much else to show for the day.  SIL is coming over for dinner tonight and salmon is on the menu. And maybe a glass of wine.

I dipped into some dark with dried cherries and almonds today.
