Roosting...

Chris and I finished off the woodland quadrats in Brampton Wood today - quite a relief! As we were entering the wood, Chris spotted a huge hornet-mimic sawfly Cimbex luteus, which we now know is a very rare species that feeds on aspen. Unfortunately the light was dismal and the photograph I have is less than perfect.

Chris also spotted this male orange tip, roosting in deep shade on a fading bluebell. Surprisingly we also found a glow-worm on a very shaded tree-trunk, a very uncharacteristic habitat for this species that is supposed to prefer open, grassy habitats with stones and rocks to hide under!
