Grass of Parnassus

It took more searching than usual to find this exquisite flower which has disappeared from one of the localities where I expected to find it.

Parnassia palustris is probably my favourite wild flower - I remember the excitement of first finding the pure white, waxy looking flowers with their greenish-grey veins growing at the damp base of a cliff. One of the joys of botanists is going back and finding that a particular plant is still growing where it has done possibly for centuries.
