A day in the life

My dear friend S has come to visit me for a couple of days and we've had a full day out visiting one of my favourite beaches, now completely empty off season, apart from a few lethargic cows munching on the thin beach grass. We had a mostly sunny day but clouds were building up and there was a new chill to the late august sea breeze that affected S's outfit. She'd decided she had to have a dip but it stopped around stomak hight and she was wearing a wind tight anorak on top. Personally I didn't join but took some pictures to prove the event.

Then we went for a semi long walk on Alvaret, the limestone plain on the southern part of the island, to see the landscape and the mighty Midland-wall, a 40 km. long limestone wall built by the locals at the beginning of the 1800s to mark the middle of the southern island. The parish walls then run to either side of the island, starting from the mid-wall. It's a very impressive piece of work, using no mortar, the flat stones are just carefully placed on top of each other, by hand of course, one by one, some of them demanding more than two hands to move. We had some little drizzle on and of on the walk but it only made the thyme, growing everywhere on the plain, smell wonderfully. A magic walk and fun day with my friend.
