Vertical Planters New Street, Huddersfield

FRIDAY

It took nearly three hours to make a 90 mile trip to Huddersfield this morning and a similar time to get back home to Wales this evening. Lots of hold-ups and the Bank Holiday weekend traffic.

A solitary sunflower brightened up the tired looking ornamental pond at Greenhead Park (see extra).

The main blip shows one of the controversial "vertical planters" that are being erected in the town centre and which are drawing mixed reactions from the public.

The planters are made of powder-coated rings of mild steel set in a pre-cast concrete base. They are said to contain “anti-climb” measures which will ensure that people cannot gain hand or footholds.  Kirklees Council’s Conservation Team state that the planters represent “elegant structural form” and are of a “high quality design and materials” which will “complement the architectural and historic character” of New Street.
