‘A Peaceful Haven’

I walked up to Fountainbridge at lunchtime to see a new audiologist and to have a thorough (and very useful) hearing assessment.

In the last 50 years, the area has been extensively redeveloped as part of a significant slum clearance scheme, and very few of the original buildings remain. His office is in one of the many plate glass buildings that have replaced them, but just round the corner, I found this little enclave of ‘colony style’ buildings.

It's right next to the old Meat Market and it's called Chalmers' Buildings. It was built in 1855 by Patrick Wilson, an architect who was also involved in other early Edinburgh Colonies schemes.

A welcome find!
