Typology

Studying the way in which artefacts change in style over time is an important aspect of archaeological investigation. It is particularly useful in the dating of material cultures and sites of human occupation.
Sometimes it is possible to follow the stylistic changes in the manufacture of some typical artefacts within one location (or site) with secure stratigraphy, thereby allowing approximate or relative dating of any context within which an isolated find is made at a separate location (or, indeed, site).
If you will now turn your attention to slide 1.....

Very nostalgic, this crisp packet. The price of 4d places it before 1972, and the wee man in the tammy must have disappeared as a Golden Wonder mascot shortly thereafter. I'm sure there will be a sad website of "Crisp packets through the ages" if you want to check.

By the way, for all those who complain that sweets, biscuits and crisps come in smaller packets these days, the modern packet is "25 g", the 1960s packet is "23 grammes".
