Old Perithia

We went on an adventure today. We had read about the Village of Old Perithia which is along the north coast then up in to the mountains so we decided to visit it. It was a windy road as we got nearer but we have been on worse! As we reached the top it became apparent that this was where some of the recent wildfires had been. In the only shop which sells the local honey products we met a very interesting Yorkshire man. He had bought a house in the village thirty years ago and now he has retired from the oil industry he lives there permanently. He earns his beer money by helping out in the shop. He told us that the fires lasted for three days and it took two helicopters, a plane and loads of locals from the surrounding areas to keep it back from the village and finally put it out. Sadly it was highly likely to have been started deliberately. 
He was very interesting and we could have chatted for ages but eventually we went to walk round the old village. Most of it is derelict now but there is a beekeeper and his wife who have a thriving business and four very traditional tavernas in the village square. We had lunch in one of them and the food was lovely although there were a lot of wasps around which made eating less pleasant! 
After that we drove further round the coast to Kassiopi. A very pretty little town where we sat for ages watching all the day trippers returning their hire boats which made for great 'people watching".
The last time we were in Kassiopi I had bought myself two dresses and it has now become a tradition as I went into the same shop and bought two more!
