We were looking at a tool that is better in Photoshop cs5 and cs6: the Lighting effects.  They still work a bit in the Beta version I have but no where near as well.

It is possible to do the same sort of thing using gradients on masks - but not as well.  We also tried using Lightroom masks to do the same sort of thing.
