A Heartening Talk

I went along to the monthly talk organised by and held in our local library this morning.

Today’s talk was by Simon talking about the restoration of Cley Harbour. Cley was an important and busy medieval port but the channel has silted up over the years and was no longer viable. A committee of dedicated volunteers have now cleared vegetation, had the channel de-silted so boats can now return to the channel and turn round. They have also built a quay for mooring. This has enabled the village to hold many events including the annual ‘Harbour day’. This has been achieved by raising their own funds via pledges from locals and lots of willing volunteers (including some second-home owners) who give up hours of their time to help.

I’m sure many folk think that Cley is a ghost village of holiday homes. So it was heartwarming to hear that on the contrary, it has a thriving community who help with the harbour project (which is ongoing). The village also holds ‘open Gardens’, has a strong church community and a lively village hall committee too.

In case you’re wondering what the photo has to do with any of the above, the answer is nothing. After the talk I went to buy a new scouring pad and took a snap of a well known paint company’s colour chart which was on display in the hardware department.
