OUR HISTORICAL PAST

In Arnside and Silverdale the rock under our feet is Limestone. It was laid down in shallow seas some 350 million years ago at a time when we were much nearer to the Equator.

Lime has always been useful for agriculture and then for industrial processes. Several limekilns like this one can be found in the area. About fifteen years ago a number were restored and have interesting information boards.
