De La Warr

We headed to the coast this morning following the trunk road that skirts the upper edge of the South Downs National Park to Bexhill on Sea.

Probably most well known for the De La Warr Pavillion.  Opened in 1935 in Art Deco style it was named after the then mayor and partially designed by a German Jewish refugee. It was in the news more recently when it was restored and is an iconic listed building for the arts.

The blip was taken from the balcony where we had a coffee. I liked the light on the sea and the silhouettes of the building and the art installation called ‘Tschabalala Self Seated’ which is on display till the 29 October, what I didn’t spot was the photo bombing seagull. That made my decision to use it.

We walked along the promenade a little way to the Sovereign Light Cafe purely because it is a song by Keane that we sing in Community Choir. There was a corner with KEANE labelled above it with lots of signed photographs of the singer. Also pictures of the Sovereign Light ship and the Sovereign Light. (house) platform after which the cafe is named which was only decommissioned in 2022.

Returned via the coast passing Beachy Head, the Seven Sisters, two Cinque Ports, Pevensey and Seaforth, through the South Downs National Park, Britain’s newest Nat Park, to Brighton.

Very big and busy and expensive to park. I’ve only ever driven through before so wanted a closer look. Had we not been visiting Bexhill we would probably have got the bus.

Had a walk around the Royal Paviliion and then through the Lanes area. Lots of shops and eateries so we stopped for an early tea.

One bonus was there were lots of art installation Shaun the Sheep dotted around labelled Brighton Flock! Chris and Eda love Shaun the Sheep and often laugh out loud when watching it. The other bonus was the parking fee was less than we expected when we got back to the car.

Nice and sunny again but plenty of sea breeze at the coast to blow the cobwebs away!
