Bixby Bridge on the Big Sur

We spent the morning in Monterey in the harbour area where John Steinbeck used to live. The port used to have a massive sardine catch and had a number of factories for sardine processing and canning. The sardines were predictably overfished and when that business collapsed the area has been converted to marinas, hotels and restaurants. After a coffee we drove to Carmel and walked along the beach. Along the way we stopped and watched sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and cormorants. The whole area feels very affluent and eating and drinking is very expensive by UK standards.
In the afternoon we drove south down the Big Sur. Very beautiful and with more of a remote feel than I’d expected. We stopped at Bixby Bridge which I’d never heard of but I’m told is much featured in commercials and some TV shows. It’s certainly a very beautiful and striking bridge.
