Now, as I see it......

Changing plans

We had a holiday in Egypt booked for late next year which would have visited Cairo and the Pyramids, El Alamein, and then down the Nile by plane and ship to visit, among others, Luxor and Aswan.  We had paid a deposit and were looking forward to it, but the atrocious events of the last few days in Israel have made us think hard about it.  It may not become anything further than a retaliation but all the signs are there for it to escalate into a full scale Middle Eastern conflict.  If that happened, then no doubt our holiday would have been cancelled anyway but as we were rapidly approaching the time when we could no longer transfer our deposit to another holiday without incurring a large loss we thought very carefully about whether we should go.  I felt rather uncomfortable about it but as this was really W's dream holiday I pretty much took a step back and let her make up her mind.  In the event, we have decided not to go so this is probably the only pyramid I am going to see for a while.

It's not all bad news though.  Rather than cancel outright which would have lost us our deposit, we have transferred onto a different holiday with the same company.  Instead, we are now doing a tour of Northern India, which will include the Taj Mahal, Amritsar and a ride on the narrow gauge train through the mountains to Shimla.  I have to confess it is a place I'd rather go to than Egypt anyway, and W is very happy with the choice.

Maybe we'll get to Egypt one day but not, I think, for some time.  And our worries in that respect are totally insignificant compared to the appalling situation the people of the region are currently facing.
