Retaining wall

I am not sure how this would be done in other places but I am pretty sure it's not like this. These guys are bulding something in the canal not far from my place. There are two elements on show at the moment. The scaffolding across the canal and some type of sand wall enclosure. I have absolutely no idea what the end product will be because there is a bridge about 50 meters from where they are building.

They were building the scaffolding yesterday. They started from one side and went across. They made it section by section with more men being added at the end as a new section was completed. The guys at the 'being built' end were just adding pieces (the bottom ones of which were under water). There was lots of leaning out as they were building but when I was there, no one fell in. A man stayed at each upright so he could pass along the new pieces which would be used for the end. In the pic, you can see the feet of the workers as they are passing along from one person to the next the planks that will make up the walkway on the scaffolding.

I found it fascinating to watch them yesterday but today... they are bulding some type of sandbag wall enclosure and it is even more mesmerising.

The action is taking place at the end of about 25 meters of completed wall. This will connect with the other half being built (as you can see by the guy building on the bottom right of the picture). On the bank of the canal is a huge pile of dirt which is being shovelled into bags. The bags are then loaded onto the tilting wheelbarrow looking thing in the pic and a guy runs down and tips them at the end. From there the bags are put in place by the two guys on top and the guy in the water. The guy in the water has a chest high waterproof outfit on. For the bottom bags, he drops them in the water and stomps them into place. While I was watching, the current grabbed a bag and took it a small way away. The three guys just glanced at where it disappeared and looked a little guilty then grabbed the next bag and on with the show...
