Lewes Castle

This was our outing today, stopping for lunch at a very posh carvery on the way. The food was great, but we sort of stood around when we got there as it was a hotel as well and nothing was signposted - even getting into the building was confusing! We worked our way round the entire outside, then realised that you must have to go in via the hotel reception area. Then there was no signing to the carvery and some other people told us where to go and where the bar was! Ditto with toilets - and our waiter could hardly speak English!! But they did carry the plate of food to the table for you once you had selected your food. So it was posh, but a bit lacking in some ways...!

The wind was ferocious today and it was quite exciting up at the top of the castle in Lewes. My husband and I had visited there about 20 years ago and it was very much improved, with a lovely garden and proper steps leading up to the castle. Last time, we had to just scramble up the very steep grassy slope I remember. We went to the top of the tower in the photo and there were good views of the surrounding hills and countryside as well as Lewes itself. It's obviously very popular with school trips as we saw two during the hour and a half that we spent there. Afterwards we went for a cup of tea in a florists cum tea room. The scent in there was lovely with all the flowers and the tea was really good quality leaf tea. The drive home was soooo busy - just queued and queued on the A27 near Worthing - that road is way over-loaded with traffic even just after 4pm and gets progressively worse through the rush hour. Very enjoyable day though, and we even had periods of sun.
