Ana Ruby Falls

Friday 27 October
Today, we drove up north again, to Ana Ruby Falls, a double waterfall in the Chattahoochee Oconee National Forest. The trail was just half a mile and paved, climbing alongside the tumbling waters of the creek, under the golden canopy of fall leaves. After our hike, we went into the nearby town of Helen for some lunch. Helen is a former logging town that was in decline, and resurrected itself by styling itself after a Bavarian alpine town, with building design mandated through zoning first adopted in 1969. The plan worked, as the town has become a popular tourist destination, with hiking and waterfalls in the surrounding forest, and tubing on the Chattahoochee River as some of the attractions. We enjoyed some good German food outside in the sunshine, then proceeded to Raven Cliff Falls trail. Roger and I didn’t go all the way, I decided I’d had enough for the day, but the girls continued to the end, but said we didn’t miss much as there wasn’t much water over the Falls. It was another beautiful hike along a stream, with beautiful foliage. As we made our way back, we passed several groups setting up camp for the night on occasional areas of flatter ground by the stream.
