a lifetime burning

Hiding its seeds

What a morning of rain we've had courtesy of the tail end of storm Debi.  With all the recent rain, things are now decidedly soggy underfoot and some of the local lanes are almost flooded.  The rain now seems to have stopped, at least for the moment so perhaps the worst is over.

The nuthatch is as busy as ever, grabbing its seeds and then racing off to hide them in crevices and hollows in the nearby trees and shrubs.  It is entertaining to watch it walk headfirst down the branch in its distinctive way as it does this.  I gather that nuthatches have done relatively well this year - nice for there to be a bit of a success story for a change.
