Safeguarding mothers and babies, Bhavnagar, India

The maternal death rate in India remains high at 200 deaths per 100,000 live births (compared to 12 in the UK).

Maternal mortality is higher in women living in rural areas and among poorer communities because of general poor health and lack of medical care.

We train Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in skills that will help them safeguard the lives of women in their care. Here, in rural Bhavnagar District, an IMPACT trained TBA monitors the blood pressure of an expectant mother.
