At the theatre

We went to Ferrals for a very early evening show ... 6 pm. To be fair it was described as "for families from 5 years old upwards". In actual fact they found themselves faced with the usual Ferrals audience, people of 55 upwards. They were slightly taken back I think.

The concept was "3D cinema" -- that is, they pretended they were doing cinema with very crude backdrops and props and lots of fooling about. We ranged through Cleopatra, westerns, pirates, thriller, martial arts ... all with only three actors and minimal costumes. For the first ten minutes I thought it was going to be pretty bad, and they were clearly struggling with the absence of shrieking children. Eventually S got the idea and started shouting "Nooo!!" at an appropriate point, whereupon other people joined in. It did improve, with some very funny parts in a slapstick sort of way. We all got quite excited when Cleopatra rushed out with a burning torch and started setting fire to the scenery. It wasn't up to the standard of a British pantomime though. There is a short but pretty comprehensive video summary of it here.

Anyway, it was only an hour long so we were home not long after seven. It's definitely winter now -- it's been perishing the last couple of days. Not necessarily cold temperature-wise (9C as we were coming home) -- but the wind off the Pyrenees is bitter. Ample excuse to sit round the fire with wine and leftover pizza.
