Mammatus clouds

This crazy Christmas weather we've been having has provided displays of mammatus clouds. These clouds comprise a cellular pattern of pouches hanging off the base of another cloud, typically a cumulonimbus rain cloud. Mammatus clouds are quite rare and are so called because of their udder-like appearance. They are formed by cold air sinking down to form pockets and are most often associated with thunderstorms.

Today was humid and cloudy. In the late afternoon we were enjoying quiet time outside when it began to rain and thunder. Dark clouds in the east, sunlight to the west. I was hoping for a rainbow but got these clouds instead.
