In a green shade

Exploring the network of green lanes near our village this evening. A few hundred years ago they were major drovers roads with maintained hedges and wide grass verges where sheep and cattle being moved towards London could browse whilst on their journey. Now, most are overgrown and no-one bothers about them as long as a horse and rider or a mountain bike can get through. The shrubs and trees are often still quite diverse, but the ground flora has become poor because of the heavy shade. Sections really need to be opened up again and mowed periodically to create areas of grass and flowers for insects , but any such suggestion will certainly result in objections from tree zealots. Very frustrating for wildlife lovers!
