Favourite Fireworks

After a rainy morning and grey afternoon, the sun came out just at sunset, and set the sky on fire for a few minutes. I much prefer this display to the many private fireworks happening at midnight, when everyone is allowed to make as much noise as they wish. 

Lots of people aren't patient enough to wait until midnight. So, bangers and other types of pyrotechnics are going off all around us already. So far, the cats are unfazed, but they will all go into hiding later, and so will we...

This afternoon, I met my friend and colleague U for a walk. We've made our "Silvesterspaziergang" a tradition in the last couple of years. (Silvester is the term for New Year's Eve, named after Sylvester I, and Spaziergang just means a leisurely walk). For the last two years, we went along the river Rhine for our walk, but after all the rain it has flooded the footpaths on its banks, so today we walked in the gardens and vineyards instead.
