Progress

An emergency photo for my blip today because I was too busy to take anything else. This is the chicken curry I made for supper after we got back from our visit to the optician’s.

It was a very encouraging visit, not least because we had a bit more time to ask questions. The consultant and her assistants at the glaucoma clinic at the local hospital are extremely busy and don’t have time for anything but examining Smithers’ eyes and doing various tests. So it was good to be able to ask the optician for a bit more advice on how we can help Smithers to see a bit better.

He had an eye test, which showed that he could do with a new prescription. Smithers had brought with him his spare pair of glasses with lenses from a previous prescription and they will be fitted with the new lenses when they’re ready, which will take a couple of weeks.

The main encouragement was that his other eye has pretty good sight, it’s just that the two eyes are not yet focussing together. This apparently can improve with time, and three months is not very long in the expected timescale for improvement with this kind of eye problem. The optician actually said he couldn’t see why Smithers shouldn’t be able to drive again in the future, which gave us a welcome glimmer of hope.

On our return Smithers unpacked the parcel which had arrived earlier in the day – a new iPad Air, which we hope will help him do a bit more reading than he can manage at the moment. I’ve set it up and he can now play with the various Accessibility settings to see what works best for him. I hope this will give him a huge morale boost if he can sit and read a bit more in future. He certainly deserves it.
