Swimming with the Blobs

I did a quick sketch of a swimmer from William Roberts' 1938 painting "Water Polo", as an idea for how to depict swimmers and water stylistically.

I'd not come across this artist before, but I'm keen to keep looking at his work. At the moment my knowledge extends as far as a scan of his Wikipedia page.

Apparently he was taken with Cubism, but this particular painting was from a period when he preferred more rounded shapes. He also nods to the French artist Fernand Léger (who inspired a critic to use the derisive term "tubism" to describe his emphasis on cylindrical shapes).

So many shapes, so little time!
