The Wainhouse Tower

We have been running/orienteering around Halifax this evening and we parked, as requested, on Albert Promenade which is high above the town and has splendid views across the valley. There is a Food Festival on in the town at present and so the longer courses which ran through the centre had some interesting encounters with well oiled festival goers outside the various pubs. Apparently some revellers tried to hide controls, others tried to misdirect runners down the wrong alleys and there were boozy comments about those in lycra! It all adds to the spice of urban orienteering.

Apparently the Wainhouse Tower was built by a local mill owner as a chimney to take away the smoke from his dye factory and workers but he sold the mill before it was complete. The new buyer wasn't so bothered about smoke prevention so he turned the unfinished chimney into a folly. At certain times of the year it is open to the public to climb the 403 steps to the top. Looks like a great vantage point for blipping the local landscape!

Heavy rain showers have rolled in all day with breaks for sunshine so you can see the shower clouds. Luckily it did not rain during the competition!
