All children alarm their parents, if only because you are forever expecting to encounter yourself. - Gore Vidal

From Meditations for Parents who Do Too Much by Jonathon and Wendy Lazear:

Parents don't get report cards. We muddle through, with little feedback of any kind, wondering if we're doing well or just passing.

The truth is, this job doesn't reward us --- at least not in full measure --- for many years. We may experience pleasure, amusement, joy, but we will not know for many years if we've been successful parents.

We should probably not feel too bad about this. Parenting may be one of the few things in life we can relax and enjoy --- if we let ourselves.
