IT'S MOTORHEAD SUNDAY

One week ago, we had a blizzard that dumped so much snow on us that the scheduled Winter Autocross at Road America had to be postponed due to high winds, blowing snow, severe cold temperatures (-28°F./-33°C.) and traffic warnings.  Today was the day of the rescheduled event.  We had 120 registered participants and conditions were perfect....except for really cold temps and high winds.

The week between the original date and today gave the track's maintenance crew time to prepare a proper surface for today's racers. There were snow drifts taller than a man that had to be leveled out.  The object was to have a 6" (about 15cm) base layer of snow.  Fortunately, there was a very hard layer of snow/ice underneath so constant traffic never wore the snow down to asphalt level. It was just perfection.

Three separate courses were arranged 1) the south paddock, 2) the upper paddock and 3) the Motorplex area.  The drivers were divided into three groups of 40 and took turns racing the pre-determined course at each of the three sites.  Most cars got 3 or more runs on each course before the lunch break.  Then the event was repeated for another three runs on each course later in the day.  After completion, an awards ceremony was held for the winners in each class: RWD, FWD and AWD/4x4.  Each run for each car was timed using a photo gate to start and stop each run.  Times were averaged.

All manner of automobile were out there from pickup trucks (Utes for our Aussie friends), passenger sedans, Audes, V-Dubs, Beemers, Corvettes (I couldn't believe that...they barely had enough ground clearance) and even one electric Tesla.  I talked to that driver and was surprised to learn that, even with all the racing and the cold temperatures his charge was down only 20% at lunch time.

For the photo curious, I compensated +2/3 EV to keep the snow white and not gray.  If you have questions about that, just ask and I will explain.
