Life through the lens...

The Haute - Ville

The fortified medieval old town of Vaison la Romaine. See Large.
Cobbled streets, and fountains, wind their way to the top.
Vaison had a prince-bishop since the 4th century.

He came under attack by the Count of Toulouse in the 12th century. Anticipating a struggle, the prince-bishop abandoned the lower town ( built by the Romans) and built a chateau on this rocky outcrop ( about 1195)
Over time, the rest of the townspeople followed, vacating the lower town and building their homes at the base of the chateau behind the upper town's fortified wall.

Worth the hike up to the top for the magnificent view.

A rest day for us all.
Just the usual French two hour Sunday lunch, followed by a sleep!!
