Life through the lens...

The old town

A few shots of the Vieille Ville of Vaison-la-Romaine.

We had a walk round this morning before it got too hot.
Unfortunately part of the old town was blocked off as they were filming a cookery programme for French television.
There were a few people watching, but we had no idea who they were!
Wonder if it was like that when Keith Floyd filmed round here back in the 80's!

Bought yet more cherries from this little man who was selling them for 2euros a kilo!
Well who could resist!
Half gone before we got back!

This upper town was inhabited in the Bronze Age.
When the Romans came they built a town down by the river, then in the 12th century the Counts of Provence refortified the ancient "upper town", as they were always fighting amongst themselves.

In the disturbed times of the Middle Ages the inhabitants of Vaison went back to live up here within the shelter of the ramparts and a strong castle.

Back in the 18th century most of the population moved back to the plains by the river.

Quite a history!!

Just noticed I took a slightly different shot of the town on the same day last year.
