Balnakeil Bay

This road leads to a military building on Faraid Head near Durness but apart from an occasional truck only the local farmer uses it after traversing the sands at Balnakeil. It makes easy access to view the nesting puffins but the strong wind made cliff viewing hazardous although in a previous year we had got within a few metres of the burrows.
I had found some fairly rare flowers but yet again failed to find any of the very rare scottish primula in flower although I saw the plants.
Just across the bay is the most north westerly point on the British mainland of Cape Wrath. Unfortunately the little ferry leading to the minibus wasn't running due to the gales. Only a couple of people live there in the old lighthouse cottage and they run a cafe in the summer. In December 2009 the wife went to Inverness to buy a turkey for christmas but couldn't get home for 30 days due to the local 11 mile long road being blocked by snow. Several times her husband had set out for her but was beaten by the snow and she had to content herself by staying in a caravan in nearby Durness. I can't remember if they had the turkey then.
