Beech tree in winter sunshine.

Beech tree ??  But don’t Beech trees have a wide single trunk which goes straight up to a considerable height ?
Yes they do.  But it appears that this one started life in a limestone cleft which restricted its sideways expansion. And it may be that deer ate the top growng point. Something convinced it to send out several side shoots which gave rise to its unusual structure.

This one is in Eaves Wood, Silverdale.
